System Design — Design an Online Code Editor (Replit)

Day 58 · Expert Phase · ~3 min read

Scenario

Imagine you're designing an online code editor like Replit or CodeSandbox. Users open a browser, write Python, run JavaScript, even collaborate on debugging — all without installing anything. Behind the scenes: real-time execution, file systems, multi-tenant isolation, and low-latency editing.

Architecture

┌─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ Client (Browser) │ │ Monaco Editor (VSCode engine) + WebSocket + WebRTC (collab)│ └────────────────────────────┬────────────────────────────────┘ │ HTTPS + WebSocket ┌────────────────────────────▼────────────────────────────────┐ │ API Gateway / BFF │ │ auth, routing, session mgmt │ └──────┬─────────────────────┬──────────────────┬─────────────┘ │ │ │ ┌──────▼──────┐ ┌─────────▼──────┐ ┌──────▼──────────┐ │ File Service │ │ Execution Svc │ │ Collab Service │ │ (S3 + local │ │ (container per │ │ (CRDTs/OT + │ │ FS cache) │ │ session) │ │ Redis pub/sub) │ └──────────────┘ └────────┬───────┘ └─────────────────┘ │ ┌────────▼────────┐ │ Container Mgr │ ← Kubernetes/Firecracker │ (microVMs) │ └────────┬────────┘ │ ┌──────────────┼──────────────┐ ┌────▼────┐ ┌─────▼────┐ ┌─────▼────┐ │ Python │ │ Node.js │ │ Go Env │ │ Sandbox │ │ Sandbox │ │ Sandbox │ └─────────┘ └──────────┘ └──────────┘

Key Design Decisions

Code Execution Isolation

问题 / Problem: 用户代码可能恶意 (os.system("rm -rf /"))。

microVM per session:
  - CPU: 0.5 vCPU (burstable)
  - Memory: 256MB–2GB (configurable)
  - Network: egress whitelist only
  - Filesystem: overlay FS (read-only base + copy-on-write layer)
  - Timeout: 30s default, 5min for paid

File Persistence

写路径 / Write Path: Browser → API → File Service → ├── Local tmpfs (fast, per-container) └── S3 (durable, async flush every 5s) 读路径 / Read Path: New session → S3 fetch → mount into container tmpfs

Real-Time Collaboration

用 OT (Operational Transformation) 或 CRDT (Conflict-free Replicated Data Types):

Replit 实际用 Yjs (CRDT) + WebRTC for P2P + WebSocket fallback。

Output Streaming

Container stdout/stderr → Unix pipe → Execution Service → WebSocket → Browser

Key Tradeoffs

VM vs ContainermicroVM (Firecracker)
OT vs CRDTCRDT (Yjs)
1 VM per user vs poolPer-session VM

Common Mistakes

It's like a library that gives each reader their own little room. You can do anything inside, but when you leave, the room resets. The library (S3) saves your notes. Real-time collaboration is like a magical whiteboard where two people can write simultaneously without overwriting each other.

Algorithms — #110 Balanced Binary Tree (Easy)

Day 58 · Expert Phase · Pattern: Trees (4/15) · ~4 min read

(4/15) — Building on the template from Day 54

def dfs(node):
    if not node: return BASE_CASE
    left = dfs(node.left)
    right = dfs(node.right)
    return COMBINE(node.val, left, right)

Today's problem is a variation: the key insight is the return value needs to carry two pieces of information (height + is_balanced), not just one.

Problem

🔗 LeetCode #110 Balanced Binary Tree 🟢 Easy

📹 NeetCode Solution

Determine if a binary tree is height-balanced: for every node, the left and right subtree heights differ by at most 1.

Example: 3 / \ 9 20 / \ 15 7 → True (all nodes balanced) 1 / \ 2 2 / \ 3 3 / 4 → False (node 2 has left height 2, right height 0 → diff = 2)

Real-World Analogy

Think of a company org chart 🏢. "Balanced" means every manager's two sub-departments are roughly the same size. An AVL tree is exactly a balanced BST — it enforces this property after every insertion.

Mapping to Template

朴素方法 (❌ O(n²)): 对每个节点调用 height(),总共调用 O(n log n) ~ O(n²) 次。

# TEMPLATE KEY INSIGHT: return value = (height, is_balanced)
# BASE_CASE when null: (0, True)
# COMBINE: check both subtrees balanced + height diff ≤ 1

def isBalanced(root):
    def dfs(node):
        # BASE_CASE
        if not node:
            return (0, True)  # (height, is_balanced)

        # Recurse on children
        left_h, left_ok = dfs(node.left)
        right_h, right_ok = dfs(node.right)

        # COMBINE
        balanced = left_ok and right_ok and abs(left_h - right_h) <= 1
        height = 1 + max(left_h, right_h)

        return (height, balanced)

    _, result = dfs(root)
    return result

Trace

Tree: 3 / \ 9 20 / \ 15 7 dfs(15) → (1, True) dfs(7) → (1, True) dfs(20) → left_h=1, right_h=1, diff=0 ≤ 1 → (2, True) dfs(9) → (1, True) dfs(3) → left_h=1, right_h=2, diff=1 ≤ 1 → (3, True) Result: True ✅

Complexity

  • Time: O(n) — visit every node exactly once
  • Space: O(h) — call stack depth = tree height; O(log n) balanced, O(n) worst case (skewed tree)

Alternative: Early Exit with -1 Sentinel

def isBalanced(root):
    def dfs(node):
        if not node: return 0

        left = dfs(node.left)
        if left == -1: return -1  # short-circuit: already unbalanced

        right = dfs(node.right)
        if right == -1: return -1

        if abs(left - right) > 1: return -1  # mark as unbalanced
        return 1 + max(left, right)

    return dfs(root) != -1

This avoids tuple unpacking — returns -1 as a sentinel for "unbalanced". Cleaner in some languages.

Pattern Connections

#110 Balanced(height, bool)
#100 Same Treebool

Checking if a tree is balanced is like checking if your suitcase is packed evenly 🧳. If the left side has 10 clothes and the right has 1, it's lopsided. We check from the leaves up — at each node, are both sides roughly the same height?

Soft Skills — Influencing Engineering Culture

Day 58 · Expert Phase · Staff Level · ~2 min read

Question

"Describe how you've influenced engineering culture on a team."

Why This Matters

In Staff+ interviews, this question isn't about your code — it's about organizational leverage. Culture influence is multiplicative: improve 10 engineers by 10%, and you've effectively added one more headcount.

"Our 15-person backend team had a 'merge it and hope' deployment culture — no on-call rotation, post-incident reviews happened maybe 30% of the time, and engineers didn't feel ownership over production."

"As the tech lead (not manager), I wanted to shift from reactive firefighting to proactive ownership without top-down mandates — it had to feel organic."

1. Started blameless post-mortems: After a major outage, I drafted a 5-whys template and volunteered to facilitate the first session. Within 3 months, we had 90% participation.
2. Created 'Engineering Kudos' in our weekly sync: 5-minute segment where anyone could call out a good engineering decision — not heroics, but good process (wrote a runbook, added a test, caught a bug in review).
3. Wrote the first 'Tech Radar': A quarterly doc of "use this / trial that / avoid this" for our stack. Made implicit tribal knowledge explicit and shareable.

"Over 6 months: deployment frequency doubled (weekly → daily), incident MTTD dropped from 45 min to 12 min, and two junior engineers proactively wrote runbooks without being asked — the culture was spreading without me."

❌ Bad vs ✅ Good

❌ Bad answer:

"I pushed for better code reviews and people started writing better code."

Too vague. No mechanism, no measurement, no culture-level change.

✅ Good answer:

Names a specific pain point → a concrete intervention → measurable adoption → evidence it outlived you

The key signal: did the change persist after you stopped pushing? That's culture, not compliance.

Senior vs Staff 视角

维度SeniorStaff
范围My teamMultiple teams or org-wide
机制"I introduced X""I created conditions for X to spread"
Adoption rateOthers evangelizing without you
WeeksQuarters to years

Staff+ answer should show systems thinking: you designed something that runs without you.

关键 Takeaways

  1. 具体 > 抽象 — "blameless post-mortem template" beats "better engineering culture"
  2. 自下而上 > 自上而下 — culture mandated from management doesn't stick; culture that emerges from credibility does
  3. 证明它自我传播 — the best signal is when others start doing it without you asking
MTTD, deployment frequency, test coverage, doc creation rate — pick metrics that matter

Culture is like the "vibe" in a classroom 🏫. A good teacher doesn't force students to love learning — they create conditions where learning feels natural. Praise thoughtful effort, make mistakes safe, make good habits feel "cool." That's what Staff engineers do for engineering culture.

🤖 AI — Reinforcement Learning from AI Feedback (RLAIF)

Day 58 · Expert Phase · Training Category · ~2 min read

Intuitive Explanation

You already know RLHF — humans label "which response is better" to train a reward model.

Problem: human annotation is slow, expensive, hard to scale.

RLAIF's core idea: Use a powerful AI (Claude/GPT-4) as the AI annotator instead of humans — it judges which output is better, then those preferences train a smaller model.

How It Works

标准 RLAIF 流程 / Standard RLAIF Pipeline: Step 1: Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) Base LLM → fine-tune on instruction-following dataset → SFT Model Step 2: AI Preference Generation SFT Model generates: Response A vs Response B → Send BOTH to "AI Judge" (e.g., GPT-4, Claude) → AI Judge returns: {"preferred": "A", "reason": "..."} → Creates preference dataset at scale (no humans!) Step 3: Reward Model Training Train reward model on AI-generated preferences → RM: score(response) → float Step 4: RL Fine-Tuning (PPO) Use reward model to fine-tune SFT model → Policy maximizes reward (while constrained by KL divergence from SFT) ┌──────────────────┐ │ AI Judge │ │ (GPT-4/Claude) │ └────────┬─────────┘ │ preferences ┌─────────────▼──────────────┐ │ Reward Model Training │ └─────────────┬──────────────┘ │ reward signal SFT Model ──→ PPO Training ──▼──→ Aligned Model

RLHF vs RLAIF

AI bias

Reward Model

Standard RLAIF: SFT → AI Preferences → Reward Model → PPO d-RLAIF: SFT → AI Preferences → Direct Policy Update (DPO/IPO)

Real Applications

Runnable Code

# pip install openai
# Simplified RLAIF preference generation example

import openai

def ai_judge_preference(prompt: str, response_a: str, response_b: str) -> dict:
    """Use a strong AI to judge which response is better."""

    judge_prompt = f"""You are evaluating two AI responses.

Prompt: {prompt}

Response A: {response_a}

Response B: {response_b}

Which response is better? Reply with JSON: {{"preferred": "A" or "B", "reason": "..."}}"""

    client = openai.OpenAI()
    result = client.chat.completions.create(
        model="gpt-4",
        messages=[{"role": "user", "content": judge_prompt}],
        response_format={"type": "json_object"}
    )
    import json
    return json.loads(result.choices[0].message.content)

# Example usage
pref = ai_judge_preference(
    prompt="Explain recursion simply",
    response_a="Recursion is when a function calls itself.",
    response_b="Recursion is like Russian dolls — each doll contains a smaller version of itself."
)
print(pref)
# → {"preferred": "B", "reason": "The analogy makes it more intuitive"}

Key Challenges

  4. Goodhart's Law: "当度量标准成为目标,它就不再是好的度量标准"

RLHF = a teacher grading every homework assignment personally. Accurate but slow.

RLAIF = the top student grades most assignments, teacher only reviews edge cases. Much faster, nearly as good.

Risk: the top student also has their own biases 🤔.
