System Design — Day 57

Topic: Design a Secrets Management System (Vault)

Date: 2026-06-18

System Design

HashiCorp Vault

Scenario

You work at a company with 200 microservices. Each needs DB passwords, API keys, TLS certs. Hardcoding secrets is a disaster waiting to happen. You need a centralized "secrets bank."

Architecture

┌─────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ Secrets Management System │ └─────────────────────────────────────────┘ │ ┌────────────────┼────────────────┐ │ │ │ ┌─────▼─────┐ ┌───────▼──────┐ ┌─────▼──────┐ │ Auth │ │ Secrets │ │ Policy │ │ Service │ │ Engine │ │ Engine │ │(JWT/Cert) │ │ (KV, PKI, │ │ (ACL/ │ │ │ │ Database) │ │ RBAC) │ └─────┬─────┘ └───────┬──────┘ └─────┬──────┘ │ │ │ └────────────────┼────────────────┘ │ ┌───────────▼──────────┐ │ Audit Log │ │ (Immutable, append- │ │ only, encrypted) │ └──────────────────────┘ │ ┌───────────▼──────────┐ │ Storage Backend │ │ (Consul/etcd/Dynamo) │ └──────────────────────┘ Clients: ┌─────────────┐ ┌─────────────┐ ┌─────────────┐ │ Service A │ │ CI/CD Job │ │ Operator │ │ (K8s SA) │ │ (GitHub │ │ (mTLS cert) │ │ │ │ Actions) │ │ │ └─────────────┘ └─────────────┘ └─────────────┘

Core Components

1. Authentication Methods(认证方式)

  • AppRole: CI/CD 流水线使用 role_id + secret_id 获取 token

2. Secrets Engines(密钥引擎)

  • Transit Engine:

3. Policy Engine(策略引擎)

# Vault HCL policy
path "secret/data/db/*" {
  capabilities = ["read"]  # read-only for app
}
path "secret/data/db/admin" {
  capabilities = ["deny"] # override: block admin creds
}

4. Dynamic Secrets 工作流 / Dynamic Secrets Flow

Service → Vault: "我需要 PostgreSQL 凭证" Vault → DB: CREATE ROLE app_xyz_1234 WITH PASSWORD '...'

Key Tradeoffs

Static Secrets + Rotation
Seal/Unseal(Shamir)

Seal/Unseal

High Availability

┌─────────────┐ requests ────▶│ Load Balancer│ └──────┬──────┘ ┌───────────┼───────────┐ ┌──────▼──┐ ┌──────▼──┐ ┌──────▼──┐ │ Vault 1 │ │ Vault 2 │ │ Vault 3 │ │ (active)│ │(standby)│ │(standby)│ └─────────┘ └─────────┘ └─────────┘ └───────────┼───────────┘ ┌──────▼──────┐ │ Consul / │ │ Raft HA │ └─────────────┘
Consul

Common Mistakes

Imagine a super-safe at home (Vault). Instead of giving each family member permanent keys, they go to the safe and say "I'm Xiaoming, I need the garage key." The safe verifies their identity and gives a temporary key that expires in 1 hour. Lost key? No big deal — it expires soon anyway. That's secrets management.

Algorithms — Day 58

Topic: #105 Construct Binary Tree from Preorder and Inorder (Medium)

Date: 2026-06-18

Algorithms

(13/15) — building on the template from Day 56 (Invert Binary Tree)

Links

Problem

You have a book's table of contents (preorder = parent appears first) and its index (inorder = left→root→right). Together they uniquely reconstruct the chapter hierarchy tree.

Input:

preorder = [3, 9, 20, 15, 7]
inorder  = [9, 3, 15, 20, 7]

Output:

    3
   / \
  9  20
    /  \
   15   7

Key Insight:

Mapping to Pattern

def dfs(node): → def build(pre_start, pre_end, in_start, in_end): if not node: return BASE_CASE → if pre_start > pre_end: return None left = dfs(node.left) → root = TreeNode(preorder[pre_start]) right = dfs(node.right) → in_root = inorder_map[root.val] return COMBINE(...) → left_size = in_root - in_start root.left = build(...) root.right = build(...) return root

  • 普通 DFS(第1-12题):从根出发,向下递归

from typing import Optional, List

class TreeNode:
    def __init__(self, val=0, left=None, right=None):
        self.val = val
        self.left = left
        self.right = right

def buildTree(preorder: List[int], inorder: List[int]) -> Optional[TreeNode]:
    # O(1) lookup: value -> inorder index
    inorder_map = {val: idx for idx, val in enumerate(inorder)}

    def build(pre_start, pre_end, in_start, in_end):
        # Base case: empty range
        if pre_start > pre_end:
            return None

        # Preorder[pre_start] is ALWAYS the current root
        root_val = preorder[pre_start]
        root = TreeNode(root_val)

        # Find root in inorder → splits left/right subtree
        in_root = inorder_map[root_val]
        left_size = in_root - in_start  # how many nodes in left subtree

        # Recurse: left subtree
        root.left = build(
            pre_start + 1,              # skip root in preorder
            pre_start + left_size,      # left subtree takes left_size nodes
            in_start,
            in_root - 1                 # left of root in inorder
        )

        # Recurse: right subtree
        root.right = build(
            pre_start + left_size + 1,  # right subtree starts after left
            pre_end,
            in_root + 1,                # right of root in inorder
            in_end
        )

        return root

    return build(0, len(preorder) - 1, 0, len(inorder) - 1)

Trace

preorder = [3, 9, 20, 15, 7] inorder = [9, 3, 15, 20, 7] inorder_map = {9:0, 3:1, 15:2, 20:3, 7:4} build(0, 4, 0, 4): root = 3, in_root = 1, left_size = 1 left = build(1, 1, 0, 0) → root=9, no children → TreeNode(9) right = build(2, 4, 2, 4): root = 20, in_root = 3, left_size = 1 left = build(3, 3, 2, 2) → root=15, no children → TreeNode(15) right = build(4, 4, 4, 4) → root=7, no children → TreeNode(7) → TreeNode(20, 15, 7) → TreeNode(3, 9, TreeNode(20, 15, 7))

Complexity

Pattern Connections

Preorder = introducing family members: "I'm Dad, my left child is Xiaoming..."

Inorder = family photo positions: left group = left subtree, middle = root, right group = right subtree.

With both, you can always figure out who's whose parent!

Soft Skills — Day 57

Topic: Advocating for a Junior Engineer's Idea Against Pushback

Category: Leadership

Date: 2026-06-18

Soft Skills

Question: Describe a time you advocated for a junior engineer's idea against pushback.

Why This Matters

This tests more than "did you help someone." It tests:

  1. Inclusive leadership: Can you amplify good ideas from people with less voice?
  2. Technical judgment: Can you distinguish "good idea from junior person" vs "bad idea"?
  3. Psychological safety: Do team members know good ideas won't die by seniority?

STAR 框架 / STAR Breakdown

Situation(情境):

Task(任务):

Action(行动):

Result(结果):

✅ Good:

Senior/Staff

Key Takeaways

Advocacy ≠ favoritism — it only applies when the idea has technical merit.

The strongest advocacy is "let facts speak" not "trust him."

Real empowerment = the junior gets the credit and growth, not you speaking for them.

Imagine the shyest classmate had a great idea nobody listened to. You don't just say "trust him." You research the idea yourself, confirm it's good, then tell the class "I analyzed this in depth, here's the data..." then invite them to present the details. That's real advocacy — backing a good idea with facts.
