System Design — Day 79

设计 AI 聊天机器人平台(ChatGPT 规模)/ Design an AI Chatbot Platform (ChatGPT-scale)

Est. read time: 3 min

Real-World Scenario

Imagine joining OpenAI's engineering team in 2023. ChatGPT just went viral—DAU jumped from zero to 10M in weeks, and you have a few weeks to handle the scale.

Core Challenges:

Architecture Diagram

用户 / User │ HTTPS (SSE stream) ▼ ┌─────────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ API Gateway / Load Balancer │ │ (rate limiting, auth, routing) │ └────────┬──────────────────────────┬──────────┘ │ │ ┌────▼─────┐ ┌─────▼──────┐ │ Chat API │ │ Auth Svc │ │ Service │ │ (JWT/OAuth) │ └────┬─────┘ └────────────┘ │ ┌────▼──────────────────────────────────┐ │ Message Queue │ │ (Kafka / SQS) │ └────┬──────────────────────────────────┘ │ fan-out ┌────▼──────────────────────────────────┐ │ Inference Workers │ │ ┌──────────┐ ┌──────────┐ │ │ │ GPU Pod 1│ │ GPU Pod 2│ ... │ │ │ (A100×8) │ │ (A100×8) │ │ │ └──────────┘ └──────────┘ │ └────┬──────────────────────────────────┘ │ ┌────▼────────────────────────────────────┐ │ Storage Layer │ │ ┌──────────────┐ ┌──────────────────┐ │ │ │ PostgreSQL │ │ Redis Cache │ │ │ │ (conv history│ │ (session state, │ │ │ │ user data) │ │ rate limits) │ │ │ └──────────────┘ └──────────────────┘ │ └─────────────────────────────────────────┘ │ ┌────▼────────────┐ │ KV Cache Store │ │ (GPU-side, │ │ prompt cache) │ └─────────────────┘

Key Tradeoffs

2. KV Cache — GPU

Session Affinity

Backpressure

  • 返回 503 + Retry-After(不要让用户一直等)

Common Mistakes

忽略 GPU OOM设置 max_context_length 硬限制

Back-of-Envelope

GPU "slots"
  • A100 8-GPU pod

It's like a super-busy teacher answering 1000 students simultaneously—speaking while still thinking (streaming), and remembering each student's conversation history (KV cache) so they don't start from scratch each time.

Algorithms — Day 79

#703 Kth Largest Element in a Stream (Easy) — Heap / Priority Queue

Est. read time: 4 min

(Heap / Priority Queue)

This block: 7 problems

什么时候用 / When to use: Top K 问题、合并 K 个有序序列、动态中位数

Signals: "top k", "kth largest/smallest", "merge k sorted", "median", "schedule"

Template:

import heapq

heap = []
for item in stream:
    heapq.heappush(heap, item)
    if len(heap) > k:
        heapq.heappop(heap)
# heap[0] is the kth largest element

比排序整个数组高效得多 (O(n log k) vs O(n log n))。

🔗 LeetCode #703 🟢 Easy | 📹 NeetCode

Real-World Analogy

You're a data engineer at a music platform, tracking "top K songs by plays" in real time. New play counts stream in every second—you can't re-sort everything each time.

Problem

Design a class KthLargest that:

  • init(self, k, nums): Initialize with k and an initial list
  • add(self, val): Add a value to the stream, return the kth largest element

Map to Template

🐍 Python 解法 / Solution with Trace

import heapq

class KthLargest:
    def __init__(self, k: int, nums: list[int]):
        self.k = k
        self.heap = []  # min-heap of size k

        for num in nums:
            self.add(num)

def add(self, val: int) -> int:
        heapq.heappush(self.heap, val)

        # Keep only the k largest elements
        if len(self.heap) > self.k:
            heapq.heappop(self.heap) # remove the smallest

        # heap[0] is always the kth largest
        return self.heap[0]

# Trace:
# k=3, nums=[4,5,8,2]
# After init:
# add(4): heap=[4], size<3, return 4 (but k not satisfied yet)
# add(5): heap=[4,5], size<3
# add(8): heap=[4,5,8], size=3, return 4
# add(2): heap=[2,4,5,8] → pop 2 → heap=[4,5,8], return 4
#
# add(3): heap=[3,4,5,8] → pop 3 → heap=[4,5,8], return 4 ✓
# add(5): heap=[4,5,5,8] → pop 4 → heap=[5,5,8], return 5 ✓

Complexity:

O(log k) per add call (heap push/pop)

Pattern Variations

Twist
#1046 Last Stone Weight
#215 Kth Largest in Array
#621 Task Scheduler
#295 Median from Stream

📝 Quiz

{"question":"KthLargest(k=2, nums=[3,1,5]).add(4) returns?","options":["3","4","5","1"],"correct_index":1}

Imagine tracking the top 3 scores in class. When a new score arrives, you only compare against the 3rd-highest—if it beats it, swap in. That's the heap trick!

Soft Skills — Day 79

Describe how you've contributed to hiring and growing a team

Level: Staff | Category: Leadership

Est. read time: 2 min

Why This Matters

Interviewers asking this want to know: are you a net consumer or a net producer of team resources? Staff+ engineers multiply team output through hiring and growing people—not just writing code.

e.g., "作为 tech lead,我负责招募 2 名高级工程师,同时带 2 名应届生。"

Action(行动)—— 这是面试官最想听的:

Result(结果): 量化!

Bad:

Good:

🌟 Staff/Principal 加分点 / Senior+ Tips

🎯 Key Takeaways

Hiring questions test whether you made the whole hiring machine better, not just whether you interviewed people. Like a chef who also trains the next generation of chefs—that's how the restaurant stays great long-term.

📰 本周 AI 大事件 / This Week in AI

GPT-5.6 Sol/Terra/Luna — Tiered Release Under Government Oversight

The pricing spread is telling: Luna at $1/$6 is clearly targeting Chinese models on cost, not just capability.

2. 🔄 Claude Fable 5

Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 Returns After 19-Day Outage

Anthropic's strongest model went dark for 19 days—reportedly due to export control compliance—and came back online today across all platforms.

3. 📄 Mistral OCR 4:

Mistral OCR 4 — Document Intelligence for Regulated Industries

Mistral OCR 4 supports 170 languages, runs as a self-hosted container, and outputs citation-ready structured data for RAG pipelines. Key for teams handling sensitive documents.

OpenAI's Internal Codex Stats: Near-Universal Adoption

OpenAI published evidence that nearly all employees—including non-engineers—now use Codex. The shift from "optional AI tool" to "default workflow" is happening inside AI labs first.

Industry Signal

The pattern is becoming routine: train → government review → selective release → public rollout. For developers: "release day" ≠ "available day" anymore. Build with fallback model strategies.

The biggest AI story this week isn't model capabilities—it's who gets access. The US government is now a gatekeeper for the most capable models. Like FDA approval for drugs, frontier AI is heading toward a regulated release model.
