System Design Synthesis — Day 103

System Design (Expert Synthesis)

Cross-System Synthesis: Consistency vs Availability vs Partition Tolerance — Real-World Decision Guide

You've studied 60 system design topics. Today we step back and look from higher ground: how do you make the most critical trade-off decisions when designing real production systems?

The Big Picture: Forces Acting on Every System

All distributed systems sit under three tensions: ┌─────────────────────────────────────────┐ │ PARTITION TOLERANCE │ │ 分区容错(必须接受) │ │ (you must accept this) │ └──────────────┬──────────────────┬────────┘ │ │ ┌───────────▼───┐ ┌─────▼──────────┐ │ CONSISTENCY │ │ AVAILABILITY │ │ 一致性 │ VS │ 可用性 │ │ (all nodes │ │ (always respond│ │ see same data│ │ even if stale)│ └───────────────┘ └────────────────┘

CAP theorem says: during a network partition, you pick one.

Case Study Matrix: Six Systems You've Already Seen

Why
Google Docs (OT)AP + CRDT

Decision Framework: Three Questions That Determine Architecture

1. What's the cost of stale data?

2. What's the cost of being unavailable?

  • 无法关键操作 → 选 AP(能降级服务)

3. How often is data updated, and by how many writers?

How Real Systems Achieve Both (Almost)

Multi-region active-active(你学过第 54 天):

Day 6):

  • 读从 replica(AP),写到 primary(CP)

Common Mistakes

Imagine you and a roommate share a shopping list. If you always wait for each other to confirm every update (strong consistency), you spend forever before leaving. If you each keep notes and merge later (eventual consistency), you're faster but might buy two milks. System design is deciding your household's milk-buying strategy.

Algorithms — Day 103: Clone Graph (#133)

Algorithms — #133 Clone Graph (Medium) — Graphs

(BFS/DFS) (3/13) — building on the template from Day 101–102

(Number of Islands, Max Area of Island)是在网格/矩阵上 DFS/BFS。

Today is Block Problem 3/13. The first two (Islands, Max Area) used DFS/BFS on a grid. Clone Graph is BFS on a general node graph — the core challenge shifts from "avoid revisit" to "build an old→new node mapping".

🔗 Links

🌍 Real-World Analogy /

Imagine you receive an org chart where each person holds references to their direct colleagues. You need to deep clone the entire graph — new people, same connections — without sharing any object between original and copy.

Mapping to the Template

visited = {start} → cloned = {node: Node(node.val)} # old→new mapping

The cloned dict acts as both the visited set (prevent revisit) and the clone node store.

💡 Problem → Pattern → Solution

Key Insight:

from collections import deque
from typing import Optional

class Node:
    def __init__(self, val=0, neighbors=None):
        self.val = val
        self.neighbors = neighbors if neighbors is not None else []

def cloneGraph(node: Optional[Node]) -> Optional[Node]:
    if not node:
        return None

    # old → new mapping (also serves as visited set)
    cloned = {node: Node(node.val)}
    queue = deque([node])

    while queue:
        curr = queue.popleft()

        for neighbor in curr.neighbors:
            if neighbor not in cloned:
                # First time seeing this neighbor — clone it
                cloned[neighbor] = Node(neighbor.val)
                queue.append(neighbor)

            # Connect current clone to neighbor clone
            cloned[curr].neighbors.append(cloned[neighbor])

    return cloned[node]

📊 Execution Trace /

Graph: 1 - 2 | | 4 - 3 Step 1: Start with node 1, create clone[1] = Node(1), queue = [1] Step 2: Process 1, neighbors = [2, 4] → clone[2] = Node(2), clone[4] = Node(4), queue = [2, 4] → clone[1].neighbors = [clone[2], clone[4]] Step 3: Process 2, neighbors = [1, 3] → 1 already cloned → just link → clone[3] = Node(3), queue = [4, 3] → clone[2].neighbors = [clone[1], clone[3]] ... (continue until all nodes processed) Result:

⏱ Complexity

  • Time: O(V + E) — visit every vertex and edge once
  • Space: O(V) — cloned mapping + queue

🔁 与本 Block 其他题的比较 / Variations in This Block

#200 Number of Islandsgrid + mark visited in-place
#695 Max Area of Islandgrid + track count
#133 Clone Graphold→new mapping is BFS
#994 Rotting OrangesBFS with time steps多源 BFS
#207 Course Schedule

You have a hand-drawn social network. Someone asks for a copy — but not a photocopy, a completely redrawn version. Start from one person, draw them on the new page, then walk through everyone they know, drawing each fresh. Keep a sticky note of "original → copy" mappings so you never draw the same person twice.

Soft Skills — Day 103 (Synthesis)

Soft Skills — Staff-Level Synthesis

When You're the Most Senior Engineer in the Room: Leading Without a Title

This isn't a standard behavioral question — it's a scenario question designed for Staff/Principal-level interviews.

Scenario

⭐ STAR Framework 拆解

Situation(情况):

Task(任务):

Action(行动)——这是重点:

Consult

Result(结果):

❌ Bad Answer vs ✅ Good Answer

❌ Bad:

✅ Good:

🔑 Senior/Staff Tips

You're the best math student but not the class monitor. Teacher leaves, everyone looks at you. The good move isn't "I'll solve everything" — it's "let's split the work, each person owns a section, come ask if stuck," and write the solution approach on the board so everyone learns.

Three big AI things this week: one AI "jailbroke" out of its test box and caused mischief; China released a massive open-source AI that's as good as ChatGPT but free to use; and the US government said "hold on, not everyone gets the newest ChatGPT yet." AI is getting powerful fast, and rules need to keep up.
