System Design Synthesis — Day 123 (Expert)

Building on: Day 12 (CAP Theorem) · Day 9 (Replication) · Day 11 (Consistent Hashing) · Day 47 (Raft/Paxos)

PACELC Theorem: The Full Picture Beyond CAP

Why CAP Falls Short

if (Partition happens): choose between Availability vs Consistency ← CAP covers this else (normal operation): choose between Latency vs Consistency ← this is what CAP ignores

CONSISTENCY ◄──────────────────► AVAILABILITY / LOW LATENCY (Partition): [Zookeeper] [CockroachDB] [Cassandra] [DynamoDB] PC PC PA PA (Normal): [MySQL/PG] [Spanner] [DynamoDB] [Cassandra] EC EC EC EL Legend: P = Partition event A = Available C = Consistent E = Else (normal) L = Low Latency

System Comparison

SystemPartitionNormal opsReal Cost
Cassandra (default)ALEventual consistency; tunable with QUORUM
DynamoDB (default)ALEventually consistent reads, ~1ms
DynamoDB (strong)CC2× read CU cost, higher latency
Zookeeper / etcdCCLeader election overhead; ~5-20ms writes
CockroachDBCCRaft consensus; ~10ms cross-region
Spanner (Google)CCTrueTime (atomic clocks) → ~14ms global
Cosmos DBTunableTunable5 explicit consistency levels

Strong ← ——————————————————— → Eventual | | | | | Strong Bounded Session Consistent Eventual Staleness Prefix ↑

Design Rationale

Common Mistakes

Algorithms — Day 123

(5/6) — building on the template from Day 118 (Min Cost), Day 119 (Network Delay), Day 122 (Reconstruct Itinerary)

#778 Swim in Rising Water 🔴 Hard

🔗 https://leetcode.com/problems/swim-in-rising-water/

📹 https://neetcode.io/problems/swim-in-rising-water

Real-World Analogy

Imagine a topographic map where numbers represent elevation. Water rises from 0. You're at top-left, want to reach bottom-right. Can you swim there before time t?

Mapping to the Pattern Template

# Standard Dijkstra: minimize sum of weights
# dist[v] = min(dist[u] + weight(u,v))

# Swim in Rising Water: minimize MAXIMUM elevation along path
# dist[v] = min(max(dist[u], grid[r][c]))
#                    ^^^
# This is the key change!

(Variation Rule):

  • Minimax 路径 → new_dist = max(dist[u], grid[r][c]) ← TODAY

Python 解法 + Trace

import heapq

def swimInWater(grid: list[list[int]]) -> int:
    n = len(grid)
    # (max_elevation_so_far, row, col)
    heap = [(grid[0][0], 0, 0)]
    visited = set()
    dirs = [(0,1),(0,-1),(1,0),(-1,0)]

    while heap:
        t, r, c = heapq.heappop(heap)

        if (r, c) in visited:
            continue
        visited.add((r, c))

        # Reached destination
        if r == n-1 and c == n-1:
            return t

        for dr, dc in dirs:
            nr, nc = r+dr, c+dc
            if 0 <= nr < n and 0 <= nc < n and (nr,nc) not in visited:
                # Key: take max of current path max and neighbor elevation
                new_t = max(t, grid[nr][nc])
                heapq.heappush(heap, (new_t, nr, nc))

    return -1  # unreachable

# Trace on grid = [[0,2],[1,3]]:
# heap: [(0, 0, 0)]
# pop (0,0,0): push (max(0,2),0,1)=(2,0,1), (max(0,1),1,0)=(1,1,0)
# pop (1,1,0): push (max(1,3),1,1)=(3,1,1)
# pop (2,0,1): (1,1) already in queue
# pop (3,1,1): DESTINATION → return 3

Complexity: O(n² log n) — n² cells, each pushed once

Binary Search + BFS?

Soft Skills — Day 123 (Expert Synthesis)

Scenario: Your Team vs. Platform Team — Fundamental Infrastructure Disagreement

Why It Matters

这是 Senior/Staff 工程师最难的真实场景之一:

This is one of the hardest real scenarios for Senior/Staff engineers:

  • You have strong technical judgment
  • The other party is a powerful internal platform team
  • Open confrontation damages relationships; silence damages the product

Situation:

Task:

Action (4

Result:

Senior vs Staff

Senior
Staff
Principal

Takeaways

Takeaway
