System Design Synthesis — Day 133

Event-Driven vs Request-Driven Architecture: When to Use What at Scale

Synthesis Background

(Day 13)
(Day 17)
(Day 24)
(Day 28)
(Day 38)
(Day 62)
(Day 61)

Over 132 days, we've designed systems that span both paradigms. Today: the meta-question — when does event-driven win, and when does it hurt you?

Two Paradigms Compared

REQUEST-DRIVEN (同步 / Synchronous) ┌──────────┐ HTTP/gRPC ┌──────────────┐ │ Client │ ─────────────► │ Service B │ │ │ ◄───────────── │ │ └──────────┘ response └──────────────┘ 特点: 即时反馈、强耦合、调用链清晰 EVENT-DRIVEN (异步 / Asynchronous) ┌──────────┐ publish ┌─────────────┐ subscribe ┌──────────┐ │ Producer │ ───────────► │ Message │ ────────────► │Consumer A│ │ │ │ Broker │ ├──────────┤ └──────────┘ │ (Kafka/SQS) │ ────────────► │Consumer B│ └─────────────┘ └──────────┘ 特点: 解耦、异步、最终一致性

Real-World System Analysis

Decision Framework

(Event Sourcing)

Common Mistakes at Scale

Saga Pattern / Advanced: Saga for Distributed Transactions

# 支付流程 Saga (编排模式 / Orchestrator Pattern)
class PaymentSaga:
    def execute(self, order):
        steps = [
            (self.reserve_inventory, self.release_inventory),
            (self.charge_payment,    self.refund_payment),
            (self.ship_order,        self.cancel_shipment),
        ]
        completed = []
        for forward, compensate in steps:
            try:
                forward(order)
                completed.append(compensate)
            except Exception:
                # 补偿事务回滚 / Run compensating transactions
                for comp in reversed(completed):
                    comp(order)
                raise
Key Insight: Saga replaces distributed 2PC with local transactions + compensating actions. Trade strong consistency for availability — the standard microservices pattern.

🧒 ELI5

Request-driven is like a phone call — you talk, wait for the reply, continue. Event-driven is like a group text — you send it and move on, subscribers read when they can. Use the phone for payments, group texts for notifications.

Algorithms — Day 133

Pattern: 1-D Dynamic Programming (6/12)

Algorithms — #647 Palindromic Substrings (Medium) 🟡

🔗 Links

  • 🔗 LeetCode: https://leetcode.com/problems/palindromic-substrings/
  • 📹 NeetCode: https://neetcode.io/problems/palindromic-substrings

Building on the Pattern

Previous problem (#5) found the longest palindromic substring. Today we count all palindromic substrings. Same core technique, different output.

Pattern Variation

通用 1-D DP 模板: dp[i] = TRANSITION(dp[i-1], dp[i-2], ...)

和 Day 132 (#5 Longest Palindromic Substring) 的对比:

Real-World Analogy

Imagine scanning a DNA sequence for all palindromic restriction sites — every position can be a center. Expand outward, stop when it breaks.

Problem

aaa" 有 6 个回文子串:"a", "a", "a", "aa", "aa", "aaa"

✅ Python 解法 / Solution with Trace

def countSubstrings(s: str) -> int:
    count = 0
    n = len(s)

    def expand(left: int, right: int) -> int:
        """从中心向外扩展,返回回文数量 / Expand from center, count palindromes"""
        local_count = 0
        while left >= 0 and right < n and s[left] == s[right]:
            local_count += 1   # found a palindrome
            left -= 1          # expand outward
            right += 1
        return local_count

    for i in range(n):
        count += expand(i, i)      # 奇数长度 / odd length: center at i
        count += expand(i, i + 1)  # 偶数长度 / even length: center between i and i+1

    return count

# Trace for s = "aaa":
# i=0: expand(0,0)→ "a"=count 1; expand(0,1)→ s[0]='a'==s[1]='a' count 1, then -1>=0? no → 1
# i=1: expand(1,1)→ "a" 1; then "aaa" 1 → expand(1,2)→ "aa" 1 → total so far = 1+1+1+1+1 = 5
# i=2: expand(2,2)→ "a" 1; expand(2,3)→ out of bounds 0
# Total = 6 ✅

Complexity:

Connect to Pattern Block

#70 Climbing Stairsdp[i] = ways to reach step idp[i-1] + dp[i-2]
#198 House Robberdp[i] = max money using first i housesmax(dp[i-1], dp[i-2]+nums[i])
#5 Longest Palindromeexpand(center) → max length

下一题预告 (Day 134): #91 Decode Ways — 又回到 dp[i] = dp[i-1] + dp[i-2] 形式,但带条件判断

📝 Quiz

对于字符串 s = "abc", countSubstrings(s) 返回什么?

<details><summary>查看答案 / Show Answer</summary>

  • "ab" ❌, "bc" ❌, "abc" ❌

Treat each position as a mirror center — look left and right. If they match, it's a palindrome, count it! Try each position twice: as center of odd-length palindromes and as the gap between even-length ones.

Fresh Scenario: Navigating a Major Org Reorg Mid-Project

Scenario

You're a Staff Engineer, 60% through a critical infrastructure migration. The company announces a reorg: your team is split, some members move to another BU, your new manager has zero context on the project. How do you keep it moving and maintain trust?

- 写 ADR(Architecture Decision Records)补全缺失文档

- Staff

❌ Bad vs ✅ Good

🎓 Senior/Staff 级别的洞察 / Senior/Staff Insight

  1. Organizational resilience —
  2. Influence without authority — 新 manager 是 blank slate,你要快速建立 credibility
  3. Proactive vs reactive — Staff
"I treat every reorg as an opportunity. In chaos, whoever provides clarity gains influence."

💡 Key Takeaways

Imagine you're building a house and suddenly get a new foreman who knows nothing about the design. Don't complain — hand them a simple map: where we are, what's left, what's risky. That's Staff-level: creating clarity in chaos.

AI 每日动态 / AI News — Day 133

The AI Price War Intensifies: DeepSeek V4.1 Flash Sets a New Cost Floor

DeepSeek released V4.1 Flash on September 10, reportedly pricing cached input at $0.003 per million tokens — among the lowest for any frontier model. OpenAI had already cut some GPT-5.6 series prices by up to 80% in July, continuing the industry-wide token cost collapse.

For backend engineers, AI inference is moving from "scarce resource" to "near-free utility." This fundamentally changes product design: whether to inline AI, cache granularity, and fallback strategies all need re-evaluation.

📰 Story 2: OpenAI GPT-6 Astra

OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Astra, Classifies It as Potentially "Critical" Cybersecurity Risk

OpenAI launched GPT-6 Astra on September 3rd. The model reportedly demonstrates strong performance on math and coding benchmarks, but OpenAI classified its cybersecurity capabilities as "Critical" under its Preparedness Framework, temporarily halting some internal uses to add enhanced security controls.

This marks a first: an AI company publicly acknowledging at launch that a model may hit a "critical" safety threshold. It's a live test of whether Preparedness Frameworks translate into real constraints — a significant signal for AI governance industry-wide.

Anthropic Launches Claude Enterprise with 500K-Word Context Window

Anthropic launched Claude Enterprise targeting high-stakes industries (finance, legal, healthcare), reportedly supporting a 500,000-word context window. That means fitting entire codebases or large legal document collections in a single prompt.

Ultra-long context windows change the calculus for RAG. If a document set fits in context, RAG's added complexity may not be worth it — but cost remains the key variable (longer context = more tokens = higher bills).

Engineer's Take

The underlying trend: capabilities and costs are compressing in opposite directions. For product engineers, the selection framework needs to shift from "which model is best" to "which model has the best risk-adjusted cost-performance ratio."

🧒 ELI5

Three big AI moves this week: 1) AI is getting dramatically cheaper, with prices hitting record lows; 2) OpenAI's new model is so powerful they flagged it as potentially dangerous for cybersecurity and added extra controls; 3) Claude Enterprise can now read an entire large codebase in one go. The trend: AI is getting stronger, cheaper, and more in need of governance.
