System Design Synthesis — Day 134

Data Storage Selection Matrix: A Staff Engineer's Complete Framework

You're a Staff engineer at a mid-size e-commerce. PM brings 7 new requirements. You pick the storage.

Scenario → Choice

Why

Architecture

[Client] ↓ [API Gateway] ──→ [Rate Limiter (Redis INCR)] ↓ [Service Layer] ├──→ [PostgreSQL] # orders, users, catalog (ACID) ├──→ [Redis Cluster] # sessions, cache, rate limit (O(1)) ├──→ [Elasticsearch] # full-text product search ├──→ [Kafka] # events, notifications (durable fan-out) └──→ [ClickHouse] # analytics, dashboards (columnar) ↑ consumed from Kafka

Key Decision Dimensions

Consistency

PostgreSQL (ACID, serializable isolation)
Kafka + eventually-consistent store

Read/Write ratio

Query patterns

Redis / KV store (O(1))
PostgreSQL B-tree index
ClickHouse / TimescaleDB
PostGIS (GiST index)

Why This Design?

  • PostgreSQL MVCC

Using multiple databases isn't over-engineering — it's matching the engine to the access pattern. Each store does one thing extremely well.

Common Mistakes

Start with PostgreSQL + Redis. Add Elasticsearch/Kafka/ClickHouse only when you have a measured bottleneck, not a theoretical one.

Quick Reference

Algorithms — Day 134

(7/12) — building on the template from Day 126

#91 Decode Ways | 🟡 Medium | 1-D Dynamic Programming
🔗 https://leetcode.com/problems/decode-ways/
📹 https://neetcode.io/problems/decode-ways

Real-World Analogy

You receive a Morse-code-like telegram. "226" could mean "BBF", "VF", or "BZ" — 3 ways. Decode Ways asks: how many valid decodings exist?

Problem

Given digit string s, letters A–Z encode as 1–26. Return total number of decodings.

Input: s = "226"      Output: 3
Input: s = "06"       Output: 0  # "06" invalid, '0' has no mapping
Input: s = "11106"    Output: 2

Map to Pattern Template

# dp = [0] * (n + 1)
# dp[0] = BASE_CASE
# for i in range(1, n+1):
#     dp[i] = TRANSITION(dp[i-1], dp[i-2], ...)
# return dp[n]

# Decode Ways 映射:
# dp[i] = number of ways to decode s[:i]
# BASE: dp[0] = 1 (empty string → 1 way), dp[1] = 0 if s[0]=='0' else 1
# TRANSITION:
#   - single digit valid (s[i-1] != '0')       → dp[i] += dp[i-1]
#   - two digits valid (10 <= int(s[i-2:i]) <= 26) → dp[i] += dp[i-2]

What's different from template:

Full Solution

def numDecodings(s: str) -> int:
    n = len(s)
    dp = [0] * (n + 1)

    dp[0] = 1          # empty prefix → 1 way (base case)
    dp[1] = 0 if s[0] == '0' else 1  # first char

    for i in range(2, n + 1):
        one = int(s[i-1])        # current single digit
        two = int(s[i-2:i])      # current two-digit number

        # Single digit valid: 1–9
        if one != 0:
            dp[i] += dp[i-1]

        # Two digits valid: 10–26
        if 10 <= two <= 26:
            dp[i] += dp[i-2]

    return dp[n]

Trace: s = "226"

i=0: dp[0] = 1 i=1: s[0]='2' ≠ '0' → dp[1] = 1 i=2: one=2, two=22 one≠0 → dp[2] += dp[1] = 1 10≤22≤26 → dp[2] += dp[0] = 1 dp[2] = 2 i=3: one=6, two=26 one≠0 → dp[3] += dp[2] = 2 10≤26≤26 → dp[3] += dp[1] = 1 dp[3] = 3 ✓

Space Optimization O(1)

def numDecodings(s: str) -> int:
    prev2, prev1 = 1, 0 if s[0] == '0' else 1

    for i in range(2, len(s) + 1):
        curr = 0
        if s[i-1] != '0':
            curr += prev1
        if 10 <= int(s[i-2:i]) <= 26:
            curr += prev2
        prev2, prev1 = prev1, curr

    return prev1

Complexity: Time O(n) | Space O(1)

Connect to Block

#70 Climbing Stairs每步可走1或2级 → 同样 dp[i] = dp[i-1] + dp[i-2]

Soft Skills Synthesis — Day 134

Scenario: When Your Technical Decision Gets Overruled by Leadership

High-frequency Staff interview scenario: your architecture was well-reasoned, but the VP says at the last minute "we're going MongoDB." What do you do?

Why This Matters

It tests influence without authority, professional disagreement, and execution under constraints — core Staff+ competencies.

Situation(情境):

Task(任务):

Action(行动):

Result(结果):

Senior/Staff 层面的加分点 / Senior/Staff Tips

Key Takeaways

  • Execution after disagreement is what separates Staff engineers from senior engineers

We've covered Embeddings, RAG, Vector DBs, and Agents separately. Today: wire them into one production system.

Full Architecture

[User Query] ↓ [Embedding Model] → query_vector (e.g., text-embedding-3-small) ↓ [Vector DB] → top-k similar chunks (cosine similarity) (pgvector/Pinecone) ↓ [Reranker] → cross-encoder reranking (optional but improves quality) ↓ [LLM Context] → prompt = system + retrieved_chunks + query ↓ [LLM] → answer ↓ [Guardrails] → check for hallucination, PII, toxicity ↓ [Response]

Runnable Code

# pip install openai numpy scikit-learn
import numpy as np
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI() # uses OPENAI_API_KEY env var

# ── Step 1: Embed documents ──────────────────────────
def embed(text: str) -> list[float]:
    resp = client.embeddings.create(
        model="text-embedding-3-small",
        input=text
    )
    return resp.data[0].embedding

Key Parameters per Component

Embedding

Chunk

256-512 tokens + 50 token overlap

Top 3 Failure Modes

→ 解决:system prompt 明确 "ONLY use the provided context",加 citation 要求

Agent 扩展:当 RAG 不够用 / When RAG Isn't Enough → Agents

# RAG 的边界:只能回答"知识库里有的"
# Agent 可以调用工具:查数据库、调 API、执行代码

tools = [
    {
        "type": "function",
        "function": {
            "name": "search_knowledge_base",
